Are you planning to build a stone retaining wall for your garden? If so, there are a few things you need to know. You should check the local codes before you begin digging- also, you may need to get a permit. But sometimes, you will not be bothered if you keep the retaining wall 3’ high or less. Also, if it so happens that your slope is too large and a 3’ high retaining wall will not be enough, you could terrace the slope by building retaining walls in 2 or more places instead of trying to finish off the whole job with just a single wall. As per the building inspection reports prepared by experts, there is a great virtue for stone retaining walls that your drainage system comes built-in. This is why because water will usually seep through the cracks between the stones. Even if any damage from water pressure occurs, you could easily repair it. Also, you need not have to sink a footing beneath the front line, as you do when using concrete or stone or mortar which another advantage of the mortar-less stone retaining wall. While choosing stones for retaining wall, you should take care to choose stones that have at least two sides that are flat so that it will become top and bottom once in place in the retaining wall. Also, it is said that the heavier the stones that you use for the purpose, the more stability you will have but at the same time you will have to work harder though it will be worth it.
